Široka Peč

The locals claim that the name "široka" (wide), is derived from its wide wall. Because of its very high exposed wall and the jagged ridge, Široka Peč is considered to be the queen of the Martuljek range and the most difficult peak to access in the Julian Alps.

With its wide wall, it demands respect and for most mountaineers, it is not a practical goal. Even the old master climber, Kugy, who happily bragged about being the pioneer when it came to conquering the Julian Alps, humbly admitted that he never conquered it. Today's mountain climbers see Široka Peč in a different light. For them, its dappled north wall with its columnar ridge presents an exceptional challenge.
